Sniffing Trees

image

When my wife and I were at Bryce Canyon exploring the vast and wonderful views, we enjoyed on a beauty that is completely unnoticed among that vast glory of the park.  We learned this secret joy from Dave Bedell,  the rock climbing and backpacking instructor that we assist his classes.  He taught us something unique, how to sniff trees. You see a certain tree called “Jeffrey Pine” smells like vanilla when you get your nose really close to the bark.  And now my wife and I go around and smell trees.

For me treesniffing is a reminder to enjoy the beauty around you in all its dimensions.  Have you ever looked behind you when watching a sunset?  Sometimes the colors in the cloud banks are more incredible than the sunset. Have you stopped to just enjoy another person’s presence?

Beauty is all around us in many forms.  As we recognize the beauty in every situation, we will experience the joy that God has instilled in all of creation.
